  • Now That Snail Mail Has Pretty Much Been Rendered Obsolete, Congress Is Finally Getting Serious About Terminating Postal Surveillance

    Mail

The usefulness of this data is probably low. Postal Inspectors know. When I was refining address label reading by video on magazines class mail in sorter upgrade I had to collect all kinds of stats. Crazy time in the 1980's . I sent data to management and the suits did their job. Any questions from me about accounting or legal issues I meat with Inspector assigned to the procurement. (1980's process control was rack of interface boards and PDP-11 user interface.) Retired me says dump the obsolete policy..

I'm not a writer. Seems some union ball-busting

OK. Some hate unions regardless of the industry - on worker side, certification for tech skills, rates of pay are set, and benefits.. No clue how WGA works. Safety first is more than words. Maybe for WGA safety first for A.I. tools is study and set rules now. Last word on union members - A skill (think pyro & stabby/shooting stuff) certified via training & testing and standards like Time-In-Grade do cost a production more money. I personally would not wing it, right , Mr Baldwin.

Moderate a Forum of like minded people can be easy, Twitter FkNo

As I said, like minded people in a forum/community/invite is like a busy club at times. Something like Twitter is like David Lynch meets Disney and your nosey grandmother and then starts looking like that LSD-25 trip you sorta recall when a Twitter post flags moderate. <-- From lurking. There is no way I would take the job. Would AOC come out and play? (Answer in 2 words and a giggle.)

  • How Bluesky’s Invite Tree Could Become A Tool To Create Better Social Norms Online

    SSDD

I have been on BBS, Mailing Lists, Forums, mod on a software help/develop/test product Forum (still a mod). Any invite only community I took time to use had low survival rate. Twitter was quite fun and useful when it had the "those microblog nerds" label. As soon as the celebrities, politicians, and others moved in IRC on meth is what it became. I do not think there will be Bluesky in my future.

  • Mozilla Wonders What Social Media Could Look Like If It Started With A Clear ‘No Assholes’ Policy

    fairuse ( profile ), 09 May, 2023 @ 10:54pm

    So, this is modern forum?

I have been in mod fights but that was where admin "owned" the Forum. (PHP are you still alive?) Mods going off on the poster like "the hand of god" was not too much of a problem because there are rules, and mods did not get paid - don't let the door hit you in the ass leaving. I recall Yahoo groups. I tried to use it, never worked out. I'm going to watch and read up. I'm not in active in the Mastodon/Fediverse so maybe it is time. I could not believe how thin skinned some mods were. Different kind of community, there was no walk in and start posting crazy because, in my case as mod back then I would only bounce trouble maker to admin when it was time to kill account. If Mozilla has found a way to return to the Forum feel (admin, mods, user posting and sharing without central control like Twitter it may be fun). InvisibleCat

    fairuse ( profile ), 09 May, 2023 @ 06:34pm

I did not think about Utah's "mobile digital ID" - it is poorly designed and does not work online. I assumed the well tested Louisiana system, not without its own problems, was available to other states as a custom service. Silly me, every state will declare their age verification system or hit the road. Will never work even if (my head explodes into glitter).

  • Adult Content Industry Sues Utah Over Porn Law

    fairuse ( profile ), 09 May, 2023 @ 05:39pm

    Digital ID

I read Louisiana age verification law. Pulled up the company that developed the system. Not trivial and is probably expensive to maintain. Later an article stated Pornhub was using that system. Did Utah pay for that system which I bet needs customization for Utah. If Utah could not meet the systems requirements then - bye. I cannot see how this could work anywhere except in Louisiana. The system description says no data is stored it's a Motor Vehicles database check. I have (state issued) Real ID with all the pretty marks but it's not a drivers license, however, it is in the Motor Vehicle database (duh). How would Louisiana Digital ID System access (my-state-database) without some tweeks and of course cost to (my-state). Not going to work.

  • Details Of FTC’s Investigation Into Twitter And Elon Musk Emerge… And Of Course People Are Turning It Into A Nonsense Culture War

    FTC and Twitter

I remember when Twitter used Text Message when DM landed. I found it useful even though I am not found of security problem. Reckon that also tweaked the FTC - feature gone. I posted comment on: https://www.techdirt.com/2022/12/20/techdirt-podcast-episode-340-the-new-abnormal-on-twitter/ Nice blow off steam moment. Notice the date, almost Xmas. It's March and the hearings with smug people saying whatever they want (hello cameras). When I heard "so called journalists" my attention kicked in, all down hill as Madame (forgot name) tried tricking journalists to supply sources and more. Pretty low-rent and everyone knows don't do that. Since FTC is already playing I added a bit from Maryland SB 844 (Not sure MR ELON Fights that): "BY adding to Article – Commercial Law Section 14–4501 through 14–4513 to be under the new subtitle “Subtitle 45. Maryland Age–Appropriate Design Code Act” Annotated Code of Maryland (2013 Replacement Volume and 2022 Supplement)" https://www.techdirt.com/2022/12/20/techdirt-podcast-episode-340-the-new-abnormal-on-twitter/#comment-2912951

  • Techdirt Podcast Episode 340: The New Abnormal On Twitter

    fairuse ( profile ), 17 Mar, 2023 @ 01:27am

Reading Comments First. Why? Just Because.

Why Twitter Why are you doing this to me? I have been hanging around Twitter a while. I was fine with it before the celibs and politicians got onboard, of course with baggage and thin skin. BEFORE MR ELON:Twitter was what it was. Useful to me and I my squeal control is set high. AFTER MR ELON: All the stuff you were talking about in December plus an abundance of the person ya'll tried to talk to in this section. The closing third party apps while EM makes changes I'm OK with. The FTC stuff is in my Not-My-Problem shelf. That said Ii added EXIBIT A and wonder how that is going work. The Governor of Florida dealt with activist teachers in grade school and that was noisy, right Evil Corp Theme Park. Between the Pronoun Cult and Trans Activists I doubt MR ELON is ready something like Maryland SB 844. EXIBIT A: Children The same burden of estimate child's age. Assessment per AG rules, if approved the online product (clumsy descriptor) can then be put online. All the stupid you can expect including the part where the product has science fiction level of understanding of the child's ability and the product will not do harm, list of harms goes here, TOTALLY IMPOSSIBLE unless the product is at the state of a fictional device in a television series - (CBS) Person of Interest.
