A Conference All About Art On The Web

Kevin Clark, a musician who has done some neat things that we’ve written about in the past, has been working on a cool series of events in NYC recently, called RUCKUS NYC, trying to bring together a variety of artists who are using the web to their advantage. Of course, it’s not just a gathering, but a concert as well. He’s also running a Kickstarter campaign, seeking support for the event, which looks quite cool. That campaign ends soon if you’d like to help out and support it.
Art matters. And it’s hard. So we’re bringing a bunch of amazing people together to talk about how they make their art, get it online, and build a career.
We’re artists ourselves. And the changing digital tools, the power (or not) of the old system, and the pressures of the economy are all big, scary issues for us. We’re building RUCKUS NYC to help each other find a way forward.
We’ve been seeing more and more stories of artists looking forward, rather than backwards. Of looking at opportunities, rather than looking for a place to point the blame finger in a changing market place. It’s nice to see positive events like this one springing up.

I just don’t see this as a Kickstarter type campaign. Why not just set up the show dates, sell access badges / IDs for a reasonable price, and work to get the art community to participate?
Why Kickstarter?
One of the main reasons we’re using Kickstarter is that it makes it easy for people to sponsor tickets for artists who can’t afford to pay the full price, as well as for people who want to to pay the full price.
As a result, we have some sponsored tickets available if you know artists who want to come.
It is an unusual Kickstarter campaign, and managing it has been an interesting experience.

So perhaps it would be better for those artists to start a “send an artist to camp” project?

I have somehow managed to roll that premise into a business model…
I hope that not only the KS campaign and the project itself is going to have some really cool results. Some of which would have not never occurred to folks.

Well one thing is for sure there is no way in hell I could have been an artist in the past with no computers. When it comes to drawing and painting I have absolutely zero skill.
Over the past 15 Years I’ve been a Photoshop junkie and I know its inner workings like the back of my hand. Without it I’d be pretty fucking bored lol.
