If Lindsay Lohan Deserves Any Money From E*Trade, It's Probably For Making Its Ad So Popular

from the milkaholics-anonymous dept

A few weeks ago, we wrote about Lindsay Lohan's bizarre lawsuit against E*Trade over a commercial with a talking baby named Lindsay that Lohan insisted was actually supposed to be her... mainly due to a reference to her being a "milkaholic." This resulted in a series of interesting points -- including the fact that many, many, many people who saw the commercial made absolutely no association with Lohan at all, especially given that Lindsay is a decently popular name. But, many people also wondered if this was really some bizarre marketing scheme for both E*Trade and Lohan -- and if that's true, then it worked. m3mnoch points out that the commercial in question shot to the top of the "most viewed online commercial" list. I doubt that E*Trade will owe any money to Lohan for the lawsuit, but perhaps it should pay up for the "ad placement."

Thank you for reading this Techdirt post. With so many things competing for everyone’s attention these days, we really appreciate you giving us your time. We work hard every day to put quality content out there for our community.

Techdirt is one of the few remaining truly independent media outlets. We do not have a giant corporation behind us, and we rely heavily on our community to support us, in an age when advertisers are increasingly uninterested in sponsoring small, independent sites — especially a site like ours that is unwilling to pull punches in its reporting and analysis.

While other websites have resorted to paywalls, registration requirements, and increasingly annoying/intrusive advertising, we have always kept Techdirt open and available to anyone. But in order to continue doing so, we need your support. We offer a variety of ways for our readers to support us, from direct donations to special subscriptions and cool merchandise — and every little bit helps. Thank you.

    exactly

That's what I was telling a friend of mine last week. If companies realized how easy it is to dupe the mainstream media into handing over tons of free publicity... the news would be filled with useless drama, instead of the gripping issues of our time...oh.. wait...

If companies realized how easy it is to dupe the mainstream..

What do you mean "IF"? They do know and they do it all the time. From staged religious protests over a "controversial new movie release to sex tape "scandals". Companies and individuals do it all the time. I doubt etrade was involved, but Lohan's motivation to speak out against the ad was to get her name back into the tabloids. Alas, the death rattle of a deflating career.

    Thinking?

I would be very surprised if E*Trade was that social media savvy. Lindsey thinking is an oxymoron.

"Ad placement" - only if they had a deal. Otherwise, if that was not solicited E*Trade may probably even sue her. As I recall, nobody likes a free "unsolicited" advertisement these days... 8^)

    Milk-a-what?

That commercial was funny the first time I saw it. I know I rewound and re-watched it the first time it came on. "Milk-a-what?" I never associated it to Lohan until the lawsuit came out. Funny, how that works.

Did Lindsay think of this herself? I should think not... She's always too drunk or too stoned to think of money-making schemes like this.
