GoDaddy Officially Has Name Removed From Judiciary's List Of SOPA Supporters
from the keep-editing dept
There was some concern that GoDaddy had only said they were pulling their support for SOPA, but hadn’t actually done so. However, the company is now pointing out that it officially asked to be removed from the Judiciary Committee’s list of SOPA supporters and that’s now been done. I will note, however, that despite the claims that it is no longer supporting SOPA, the Graphic Artists Guild is still listed. Add to this the Judiciary Committee having to scrub the list of a bunch of law firms who never agreed to support the bill, as well as companies like Gibson Guitar, and it seems that the Judiciary Committee is going to be kept busy whittling down this list.
Of course, it’s unclear why the Judiciary Committee only puts up a list of (rapidly shrinking) supporters. If it wanted to present the various opinions on the bill, shouldn’t it actually show the large and growing list of SOPA opponents?

Because how would they get their money for the next campaigns?
List of Companies
Something that’s bugging me about this list, that I haven’t heard mentioned anywhere.
Many of the “Companies” on this list are in fact subsidiaries of larger “big content” companies like Viacom.
Most egregious are things like “Universal Music” and “Universal Music Publishing Group, or “Warner Music Group” and “Warner Music Nashville” towards the bottom as though they weren’t part of the same organization, but more subtle are items like “CMT” being part of Viacom, or “MCA Records” being part of Universal.
How long is this list really if we strip out this kind of redundancy? If corporations are people does this constitute “cloning” for the purposes of legislation?
Re: List of Companies
So can I have subsidiaries and list myself multiple times in a petition?
Re: Re: List of Companies
(seems like corporations really do have more rights than individuals).
Re: Re: Re: List of Companies
Also they are immortal.
Yeah, if you didn’t just get chills down your spine you are probably a corporation.
Re: Re: Re:2 List of Companies
They should do like the Bicentennial Man and arrange for themselves to become old and die. Then we can declare corporations a “human being”.
Re: Re: Re: List of Companies
It the people that own/run the corporations that have more rights than individuals. Corporations are nothing more than aprons which serve to protect the wealth and power of the 1%. That’s the “beauty” of being a limited liability corporation; do as you want to rip off, or even kill and maim, people, keep the profits and let the corporation take the blame.
Re: Re: List of Companies
Only if you are a corporation.
Re: List of Companies
That actually sounds like a good exercise. I might have to play around with that to see what comes out of it.
Re: Re: List of Companies
Yeah I was just contemplating taking a crack.

This makes it pretty easy since the companies listed on Wikipedia click through and have their corporate parents listed.
I was planning on just doing a bulleted list, possibly a collapsible one (collapsed by default) since this is the web after all.
Re: Re: Re: List of Companies
But then that would make their whole extortion racket collapse …
Oh well...
…sucks to the be them. They supported it to start with, and that’s enough for me. I’ll never do business with GD againt and I’ll make sure that any registrar I do use isn’t a subsidiary of GD.
Well...
They can still eat shit. They aren’t getting my domains back. I like it when large companies feel us pinch. It may be selfish and immature, but it’s still nice to know that we can sometimes kinda-sorta a little bit somewhat fight back.
GoDaddy, Go!
Go away!
Welcome Mongoose.

Re: Re:
Out of curiosity…what does Mongoose (an HTTP server, admittedly pretty cool and tiny) have to do with a domain registrar? If you’ve got some sort of integration with DynamicDNS or the like on the roadmap I could understand…
Re: Re: Re:
Maybe he was hosting on godaddy?
Re: Re: Re:
Nothing, I was just playing with it and as you said it is cool.
Now if I could integrate Mongoose with bitname or something, then it would be wonderful.
Bitname + Bittorrent + Mongoose + Herbivore would be cool but I’m afraid that is a bit into the future.

Orwellian State of Fear
Two frightening pieces of controversial legislation, SOPA and The NDAA only go to further stifle our Constitutional Rights without the approval of the Americans, just as the Patriot Act was adopted WITHOUT public approval or vote just weeks after the events of 9/11. A mere 3 criminal charges of terrorism a year are attributed to this act, which is mainly used for no-knock raids leading to drug-related arrests without proper cause for search and seizure. The laws are simply a means to spy on our own citizens and to detain and censor public opinion without trial or a right to council. You can read much more about living in this Orwellian society of fear and see my visual response to these measures on my artist?s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/09/living-in-society-of-fear-ten-years.html
Keep moving the domains. Show the other companies that we netzians are not to be fucked with. If that has to be with the body of GoDaddy before them so be it. They started the war. Let them know WE will end it.
Lets see the list
I would very much like to see the list of opponents vs supporters of this bill right here.
Mike, I’m sure you have the list, why not just post it up here?
You are trying to present the various opinions on the bill correct?
Re: Lets see the list
He has both lists linked in this article. What more are you wanting?
Re: Re: Lets see the list
Ah – I got confused by the “new comments on this thread” email.
I thought you were responding to my comment about how the list of “supporters” is padded due to companies and their subsidiaries being listed as individual supporters.
I see what you meant now after viewing on the site.
All talk - no action
I would tend to believe GoDaddy a bit more if they started to ACTIVELY oppose SOPA and PIPA and spent some of their lobby money to those ends. None of this “we were against it before we were for it and then we were against it again” baloney.
it seems that the Judiciary Committee is going to be kept busy whittling down this list.
Or…they’ll just ignore the removal requests and continue to cite the original list as if it were still accurate. Much like they continue to use debunked study results.
Pain
At least GoDaddy has now done the most important step and boy have they sure changed their tune within a week.
The big question now is if domain transfers away from them will now cease or if people want GoDaddy to feel the pain so they never dare do it again?
I favour the pain option myself.
stop trying to bring common sense and fair play into the conversation, Mike! since when have politicians ever done something like that?
Did they actually drop support or are they just saying what we want to hear? GD is known for “mixed” messages.
