Daily Deal: Izon View Security Camera
from the good-deals-on-cool-stuff dept
Today’s Deal features 46% off of an Izon View Security Camera. Use this simple and sleek camera to keep tabs on your pets, your home or wherever you need an extra set of eyes. It has a free app (compatible with iOS and most Android devices) that allows you to control the camera and live stream the camera’s feed. Of course, as with any internet-connected video camera, be aware that you’re (at the very least) opening up some potential for others to access the stream. So this isn’t a product that we recommend if you’re the next Ed Snowden trying to figure out what documents to pass along to Glenn Greenwald and don’t want anyone else to see what you’re doing. However, as a convenient, inexpensive and practical way to set up an internet-connected security camera to check on your house, the Izon View may be worth a look.
Also, today is the last day to use the TECHDIRT10 code to get an additional 10% off of your first purchase.
Note: We earn a portion of all sales from Techdirt Deals. The products featured do not reflect endorsements by our editorial team.

“Of course, as with any internet-connected video camera, be aware that you’re (at the very least) opening up some potential for others to access the stream.”
It’s apparently not a (completely) unsecured stream. From the izoncam.com website:
Whatever that means. xxx-bit encryption? Cloud server security? No mention. It does say it supports wpa2 wifi. So it’s at least *nominally* secure — but then so were “The Fappening” targets, apparently.
all sales final
Went to buy this because it could be a neat way to keep tabs on my place. The “all sales final” terms of purchase killed that for me.
If a product in 2015 that isn’t 2nd hand doesn’t come with a proper return policy, I’m out.
I really like the concept of Techdirt deals. Just not where I set myself up to be a sucker.

It’s pretty typical on “daily deal” type offerings to make it final sale, because of the greatly discounted price. That’s often part of the deal. You’re taking some amount of risk in it not being returnable, but the discount is pretty high from the list price.
FWIW, if you buy it and it’s not what you’re looking for, I imagine you could probably sell it on eBay or somewhere for a decent amount, so the downside risk probably isn’t that high. But, that said, if a no-return policy is really a deal breaker, this probably isn’t the right deal for you.
Re: Re: all sales final
Yeah my concern is if there’s a problem, not if I’m not happy with it.
I appreciate the response. And FYI I did buy one of the ZeroLemon solar chargers as a result of checking out the camera 🙂

“make it final sale, because of the greatly discounted price. … the discount is pretty high from the list price.”
The “list price” is basically meaningless when practically no one is paying that price. It’s disingenuous to claim that something is worth substantially more than the average retailer is charging. It gives the place a hucksterish feel, as if bottom-fishing for suckers who don’t know how to use Google. (Yes, such marketing hype and sales gimmickery is an old tradition, but that still doesn’t make it right)
As for the draconian “all sales final” rule, you can buy these security cameras from other online retailers like Amazon for the same “highly discounted” price — and get a 30 day return policy.

Yeah, but Masnick the shill doesn’t get a slice of that pie.
IZON camera contains a number of security holes

Re: IZON camera contains a number of security holes
Well if that ain’t a deal breaker (uh, yikes), the fact that it only works for “devices” of 2 flavors, instead of the several widely deployed general purpose operating systems, is.
And I thought I may have had a use for such a thing. I don’t spend a lot of time looking as it isn’t critical, but heck I’d buy something through techdirt when I can just because.
Re: IZON camera contains a number of security holes
To clarify: that issue was found in the earlier version of the camera, which was replaced by the View and another model in 2014.
That being said, I’m unable to find anything directly confirming that the security issues have been fixed — but I’m also unable to find any complaints or security discussions more recent than 2013 and discussing the newer models. My guess would be that the holes have been patched, but I’m uncertain. Take that as you will.
It’s really a nice and useful piece of info. It feels awesome to read such informative and unique articles on your websites.
