  • Florida’s Anti-Drag Law Loses The Big One: Supreme Court Says Block On Unconstitutional Law Can Remain In Place

    more tax money wasted

I would dearly love to know how much of our tax money (I sadly live in FL, it has been alarming how quickly it has gotten this insane) we are spending defending all of the blatantly unconstitutional bills that governor shitheel got rammed through the legislature the last few sessions - everythig he does generates a new lawsuit he uses to campaign to the shittiest people in the state.

  • Florida’s Governor Continues To Abuse His Executive Power To Eject His Political Opponents

    CSMcDonald ( profile ), 16 Aug, 2023 @ 04:11am

This has been his playbook since the start…

Since he was elected our lovely dictator wannabe has moved and gotten his tame legislature to pass bills to restrict any local government from doing things he doesn’t like repeatedly. This was most evident during pandemic when he moved to forbid cities and counties from having masking mandates, any rent control laws, and also to prevent Key West from limiting larger cruise ships from docking due to the disruption it caused to the city and environment. He’s the absolute worst governor I’ve seen since moving to FL in 1987, he’s making us go ‘Hey, I miss Rick Scott’. Unfortunately he has his own local cult and the democrats in FL have the fighting ability of a 2 day old kitten.

  • Is Gavin Newsom Attacking Walgreens For Its Choices Different From DeSantis Attacking Disney?

    CSMcDonald ( profile ), 14 Mar, 2023 @ 10:08am

    One difference..

I don’t like Newsom’s posturing, but he’s just refusing do do business with a company. DeSantis is threatening to ruin a company by not allowing it to manage it’s parks and property if they don’t change their content to suit him instead of the market that consumes the product - with a hand picked board that includes a man who believes tap water makes people gay. So I’m going to give DeSantis a bit of an award for being slightly worse than Newsom.

  • Appeals Court Says It’s Perfectly Fine For Cops To Unreasonably Extend Traffic Stops

    I’m reminded of a conversation with a friend recently…

I had told her about another friend who had been stopped in AZ for a GPS above the dash that led to a search of his rental car and she remarked that she thought that SCOTUS had ruled against such things, I just said that cops don’t bother actually adhering to the law.

I had just come to comment with that after I looked it up (only one news article has bothered to mention this that I've seen so far) O.C.G.A. 40-6-52)  A "truck" is defined as any vehicle equipped with more than six wheels except buses and motorcoaches.  On roads, streets, or highways with three or more lanes allowing for movement in the same direction, it shall be unlawful for any truck to operate in any lanes other than the two most right-hand lanes, except when the truck is preparing for a left turn.

  • Florida Republican Gov’t Officials Bend Over Backwards To Tell Everyone That, Yes, Absolutely, They Are Punishing Disney For Its Speech

DeSantis is getting what he wanted from this

Whether or not this stands up in court, along with the bill he signed today (HB 7, the so called anti-woke law) this has his name all over the country as it makes national news. If this law (along with the anti-woke law, the don't say gay law, the attempts to control social media companies law) fails in court he gets to rail against activist judges and gain even more support amongst the population that are just looking for verification that they are being oppressed by the "elites" (all the while voting for people who attended Harvard, Yale, and live in country clubs) and given permission to direct their hate to marginalized people they can feel superior to and justified in their hatred against. All of this is just dog in the manger politics - because certain groups of people are now being treated more equally, we'll just burn everything down to gain power. This move will cost the taxpayers in Orlando and Kissimmee more than it will Disney, but since they vote mostly democrat, that may be part of the appeal for the party of punishing anyone who votes against us. I can't wait to find out how much money our state government will waste fighting all of these recent laws in court. All of this is to boost his inevitable run for POTUS in 2024 where he'll most likely win.

  • It Can Always Get Dumber: Ron DeSantis Moves To Eliminate The Ridiculous Disney Exemption To His Unconstitutional Social Media Bill Because He’s Mad At Disney

    CSMcDonald ( profile ), 19 Apr, 2022 @ 01:05pm

    tin pot dictator

DeSantis has moved to remove all aspects of local authority from counties and cities since he was elected, he's absolutely transparent about his autocracy - he was unhappy that the state republicans weren't carving out the congressional district maps in a completely partisan way so he vetoed their proposal and has somehow arranged it so that he alone gets to choose the new districts. Because he can use Disney as a convenient scapegoat now he's moving to remove the local authority they have had for self government of their property since they purchased the land in the 60s - this is arguably not a completely bad thing, but his reasons for it are not any of the reasons that have brought up before, but because they dared to speak against him. Since Disney has more money than god or the state, I'm sure the court battles over this are going to be long and and costly to our state, but our AGs under this and the previous GOP administration have not been afraid to waste taxpayer money fighting court cases they know are absolutely without merit. Unfortunately his posturing works, he's treated like the second coming of god, right after his orange king.

  • Florida Has Already Wasted Over $700k Of Taxpayer Funds Defending Its Unconstitutional Content Moderation Bill

    CSMcDonald ( profile ), 05 Apr, 2022 @ 11:05am

    This is just the start

The recent "parental rights" law is already being challenged in court for being overly vague (and horrendous) and they'll likely spend a shit ton of money defending this one as well. As far as small government goes, the current Florida administration and senate have been pursuing a campaign of removing all local governments ability to make decisions on everything from zoning, pandemic measures, zoning and pretty much anything that the state GOP thinks are bad. They have absolutely no actual principles except power.

We do already down here in the state. Unfortunately despite things like willfully destroying the unemployment system and continuing to wreck the environment, he's quite popular with the base, because the whole point now is apparently to see how horrible one can be to people that 'ain't like us'

    Re: aka Disney Censorship Bill

I can't find the video now, one of our democratic state senators posted it a couple of weeks ago when she asked the sponsor of that part why and got a really nonsensical and illogical reply about Disney+ which doesn't even host any user generated content.

    Re:

That would be the state senators who created this shit bill and the Governor for signing it. I'd love if there was any actual repercussions but it's my taxes paying for free advertising for him in re-election next year by trumpeting his standing up for the unfairly blocked nutcases. He's a very smart and loathsome toad our governor is.

  • Publix Gets Social Media Accounts Advertising Its Sandwiches Taken Down For Some Reason

    New updates to the story

From the Orlando Sentinel, who knows what's actually gong on here.

    https://www.orlandosentinel.com/business/os-ne-publix-twitter-pubsub-dispute-20210429-hqomjrnroraizpq7t3kswn3cny-story.html

Dickey said Publix did not demand that he shut down the social media account, just two related businesses that were profitable for him. Last year, Dickey said he had made $5,000.

“I’ve decided that I’m not going to let not making money get in the way of me living out that mission statement of bringing joy to the internet and connecting people through Publix subs,” Dickey said.

    As a FL resident....

I would just like to single out this sentence as being particularly amusing given the state of the environment in Florida:
"No policymaker would allow a company to dump toxic waste into a river upstream of a thriving town he is charged with governing."

Hi Marco, are you familiar with the red tides and algae blooms caused by runoffs from the farming industry into Lake Okeechobee and then flowing down the rivers to flow into the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean causing havoc to the various water based businesses in the towns that rely on them?

Or the current situation in Bradenton with a phosphate dumping pond threatening to overflow causing the evacuation of local residents a couple of weeks ago?

Which politicians have been in charge of this state and allowing these industries free and unregulated power to do whatever they want again?

  • Whistleblower Accidentally Demonstrates How Much Of The TSA's Security Efforts Is Pure Theater

    CSMcDonald ( profile ), 24 Dec, 2019 @ 09:58am

    Observation shows this happening

Flying out of Orlando the weekend after Thanksgiving I could see relaxed screening in operation - there was a half hour wait to get through security (which is fairly high at that airport, it's generally one of the more fluid security lines for a busy airport) - in two lines we could hear the TSA officer telling people to keep their shoes on, belts on, all electronics / laptops in the bag, and just put it through the x-ray.

I of course had chosen the line that required all the normal shoes off, electronics out, etc. Which led to confusion as the officer directing our line didn't say much of anything and people were confused because of the directions from the other line.

And of course you just smile and try not to look like you require secondary screening and get through.

  • Cable Giant Spectrum On Quest To Outlaw 'Insane' Streaming Password Sharing

    Gotta love Spectrum

I remember when the locals in my area were all overjoyed that our local cable company (with good local based tech support and pretty good customer service) was bought by Spectrum and how this was going to make things soooo much better.

Haven't heard them praising it much since they took over and ruined support and service.

    And broadcast

I live in an area where I get every broadcast channel clearly in HD with a leaf antenna - I have a USB TV Capture card and a DVR app - and I have apps that can play to the TV via DLNA.

So there's a big savings for all broadcast shows I may wish to watch and record. For other shows that are cable only, buying a season pass on iTunes or Amazon or Google is still cheaper than the entire season would be in cable costs (about $70/mo). - I figured that even subscribing to a season pass for the shows I watch would still only cost me about 2 months of cable for the entire season.

This is keeping everything strictly legal and legit. The Gawker article is total click bait wtf.
