Oh, for crying out loud. The Pope is an economic illiterate. The global poverty rate has been halved in just the last 25 years. China alone, by opening up just slightly to freer markets, has lifted almost 700 million people out of poverty in a generation, fastest ever. The freer people are, the more productive, and the more caring about the environment -- poor nations that adopt environmental regulations will stay both dirty AND poor. All of a sudden the entire progressive clone army loves the Pope. He is a total dipstick, and embarrassingly wrong.
If there is no specific crime -- breaking and entering, fraud, theft, blackmail, whatever -- then anyone can investigate anything or anyone all they like. You can portray your adversaries however you choose to, and I don't even disagree with most of the judgements, but these corporate mercenaries use many of the same techniques and technologies as Glenn Greenwald and other investigative reporters. Catch the malefactors when they're dirty, but don't rely on the justice system until it has been whipped into action through media campaigns... if then. Spying, per se, isn't illegal, but some of the component actions may very well be. In honor of Thanksgiving, I will end with an abbreviated aphorism: sauce, goose, gander, okay?

Do YOU stop paying your bills when you max out your credit? The government would NOT have had to default. When debt payment exceeds taxes PLUS all the borrowing, then you can have your default. Won't be too long. Just be patient.
I feel as if I wrote your post, as I have exactly the same skepticism about government pronouncements. Further, I then had the same emotional reaction you did to the tale, so I got that old feeling again, one now so rare that its impact is disorienting -- hope. Hope, with a little love thrown in, can move mountains. Good thing, too: There are lots of them between where we are right now, as a nation, and where we need to be -- moving back over that red line we ALL crossed, called apathy, and toward freedom once again.

JFK, Truman, Wilson, Lincoln... just about every president abused power, sold favors, took care of his friends and family, etc., etc. They also waged illegal wars (Polk, 1846, Mexico; look that one up, disgusting), assassinated and deposed leaders around the globe, ran roughshod over anyone in their way, and aggrandized themselves and their apparatchiks. Nixon is a pantywaist compared to FDR: internment of CITIZENS of Japanese ancestry, turning away Holocaust refugees, illegally arming Britain, goading the Japanese into attacking, allowing Pearl Harbor to be sacrificed following the breaking of the Purple Code, illegal power grabs, wholesale centralized economic management during WWII with untold waste, graft, and bribes. Tricky Dick is out of his league, and should be retired as the "worst example of a president." Why, we have a prez right now that the ACLU says is the WORST EVER ON CIVIL LIBERTIES. There's your primo exemplar, okay?
