That Anonymous Coward's Second Techdirt Favorites Post Of The Week
from the back-again-for-more... dept
OHAI Tourists!
*pulls on orange vest*
For those of you not shaking your heads in disbelief that I'm here
again, I'm That Anonymous Coward.
People mostly just call me TAC, my current claim to fame is appearing
in 4 sets of exhibits submitted to Federal Courts by Pretenda and its
agents, as well as suing to unmask me for intentional infliction of
butthurt... or something.
I coined the term Pretenda.
I am harsh, snarky, and pretty entertaining.
I am a legend in my own mind, and the stuff of nightmares for copyright
trolls.
Now if you'll all take your seats here on the short bus, the tour can
begin, as soon as I get past this pesky club Mike put on the
wheel.
Hand me that canister... a little liquid nitrogen works wonders on
stuck locks.
Multitool please....
Now we connect wire 1 to wire 3 and... we're off.
Palantir
(named for that creepy orb from Lord of the Rings that lets you spy on
hobbit beauty queens changing), got $196 Million in funding.
Let's ignore the absolute failure of the people behind it, and how they
planned to use the tech to undermine Wikileaks for private
customers. And they would have gotten away with it, if not
for those pesky kids in trendy masks. So a company, who has no
problem creating fake information, is being funded to gather more
'real' information for the government or anyone else with a briefcase
full of cash.
Oh everyone smile at the traffic camera, it's gathering our images to
update your status on NSABook.
Given the errors most data aggregators have... you are probably
all George Takei.
Everyone smile and say Oh My!
Everyone wave at that nice policeman
hiding in that alley... being anonymous online is okay for him, but
everyone else should register themselves.
I wonder if he works for this guy.
I guess its open minded thinking like that, that leads to
stuff like this.
Ok everyone roll up the windows, this is a bad neighborhood.
Those dark forbidding towers, the fire, the brimstone... Nope its not
Mordor, one does not just tour Mordor... this is the Surveillance Suburb.
*DUMDUMDUMMMMM*
I'd bother to narrate but this neighborhood is like the most insane HOA
ever.
Pouring money into companies, making us all less safe, with nothing to
show for it.
If you question them, you're a freaking terrorist.
They scare everyone with ZOMG the terrorists will win, even as they do
way more harm.
Protecting
the cash cow is more important than people knowing the truth.
Ok this place depresses me... here let's just do a doughnut in Rep.
Rogers lawn...
*BaBang*
Whoops sorry that was a pretty big speed bump, oh wait no it's just
EA's latest fail.
Let's pay a visit to my favorite place, the Copyright Troll
Cul-de-sac.
We should be safe, with the Government shutdown those nice men from ICE
are cooling their heels at home.
Just up here on the left, and this clicker I "found" opens the gates....
Given the amazing lengths some countries are going to appease the IP
cartels, well this is confusing.
And well this just seems to fly in the face of the horrible times they claim...
They have given up buying the laws they want, they just think they can say
it and make it law.
Yes it's time to hit the wayback machine Peabody for background, as you should have learned last
time I had the wheel... I go where I want, last tour I went
offsite to Ars.
I was talking about this lawfirm, Steele
Hansmeier LLC and their boy wonder lawyer Brett
Gibbs.
They stood before a Judge and admitted they mislead the court in the
original complaint, that the discovery wasn't enough to identify the
infringer and wanted the court to allow them access to pretty much
anything with a computer in it in the target's house.
My crystal ball is that good, I saw what was happening and well popcorn
futures are way up as the comedy keeps coming.
It would be funny haha but the wheels of justice are slow, so its more
funny utoh.
See that battered McMansion? The one that looks like its been hit by
the wrecking ball a bunch of times, and somehow is still
standing? Prenda Prime, it's pretty much Steele Hansmeier with
new siding.
HA.
I think the upcoming holidays might be a little chilly.
HA.
They 'represent' him, and their best answer is we think he'll have a
good answer?
HA!
And the cash they owe, piles up higher.
I guess gaming the justice system will finally catch up with you.
The irony, it burns. How big does the lie have to be when
even a staunch copyright advocate calls you out?
What is this little dark alley... oh this is where the patent trolls are breeding.
Much like the copyright trolls they are filling peoples heads with dreams of imaginary dollars... that never seem to make it to their greedy hands.
It is almost like some people want these trolls to succeed and keep the world from moving forward.
They extract money from people who innovate so they can spend more money to keep themselves alive.
Heh, lemme flick on the high beams.... look at them run!
Ok it's gross back here, let's get out on the road...
FSCK someone got funding restored for ICE, everyone duck down while I
get us out of here.
STAY DOWN!
Well Mike can have those bullet holes filled with bondo...again...
I would be depressed about all of the NSA
coverage, except my paranoia apparently was well founded.
Looking at the few revelations so far, can people understand why
Occupy, LulzSec, & Anonymous scare the crap out of the powers
that be?
We had paramilitary action against citizens exercising their right to
protest.
Fun fact pepper spray is banned for use on soldiers in war because it
is chemical warfare, but hosing down citizens seems to be perfectly ok.
'Merika - home of the meek and surveilled.
Maybe those they demonize most are the ones who are done being meek.
Maybe we should stop accepting what they tell us, as it's clear
they have no problem lying to us, and educate ourselves about them.
Not everything they do is well received, but when people fight back it gets messy.
I guess CFAA is the digital firehose being turned on protestors.
And back to the parking lot...
Ohhh look! Everyone wave at the drones
we aren't supposed to know about.
So we've watched our rights get stripped away.
We've all paid the tax on innovation, and gotten nothing but more bad laws.
If you question those rights we all think we still have, they call you names and start digging for dirt (or farm that job out).
Is anyone scared that the guy in the Guy Fawkes mask is making sense?
Republicans are red, Democrats are blue, the really sad thing is,
neither side gives a fsck about you.
Oh hey, Mike did my $25,000 ever show up?
You can use part of it to have the tour bus fixed up.
And that was part of the week that was.
I remain,
TAC

Pointless performance art...
While covid was raging they spent time on passing a law they know will not stand & will self destruct if 5 other states aren't on board with violating the Constitution.
"which she hopes will help parents keep their children from unintended exposure to pornography."
Maybe just maybe, hear me out, you don't need to give your child a smartphone with unlimited internet access?
Maybe just maybe you should pay attention to what your child is doing online?
Maybe just maybe pretending the problem is pron existing is the cause of all of the ills in society is stupid.
Smaller Government!!!
Unless it involves boobs!!
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re:
Some of the Rightscorp notices (and smaller players) notices were rejected because they were nothing but cash demands.
An insane Judge felt that yes the ISP was courting pirates because they dared to advertise high speed internet & the only people who use high speed internet are pirates. (rolls his eyes)
There was a smaller letter sender who literally sent an email every few seconds for the same file, so it looked like that users was a huge pirate... who might have only ever broken copyright once to obtain 1 music file... but 200 notices should terminate your account, proven or not.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re:
You are correct sir!
You win the bubblegum cigar!
There have already been very unpleasant people who have abused the DMCA notice system in this fashion to obtain real world names & addresses so they are able to stalk and harass their targets IRL.
But to protect those poor poor billion dollar companies, who claim they are losing billions while they were banking record profits its just a small price people have to pay.
Re: Re: Re:
Something something DMCA notices are to be sent to the host of the allegedly infringing content, not the search index provider.
No where does it say that Google has to do anything unless the content is hosted on a domain they control.
It was easier for Google to just give in, multiple times, to avoid the ire of cartels who face no legal downside to lying.
I mean its not like the they threatened to sue the Lumin Database, claiming it would let people find already taken down content (which was never taken down as t DMCA notice was never sent to the actual host as required by the law) not to mention it was easy to see the millions of defective notices that flood Google.
I could send a DMCA notice to Mike over something on some 4th party site, and sadly the courts might rule that he should have taken it down because a majority of them have no idea what the internet is.

"it is vital universities prevent students accessing the stolen information on the university network."
I for one am glad that the authorities are going to look into these predatory contracts that takes research that was publicly funded & then locks it up to profit.

OMG you mean they might finally make a show for Thursday nights thats decent?

"encrypted cellphone link"
OMG I guess the criminals are going dark.

So the entry tier will be what $50 a month?
And then teasers of better things the more you give?
If it launches and it is not a pay service I will be shocked.
(untitled comment)
Well technically it is unlimited, it just becomes unusable.

"would reasonable people conclude that the statement is one of fact"
She filed lawsuits parroting the lies, everyone knows its wrong to lie to courts.

Well they can't get everything right, but hey they did manage to mute Metallica so there is that.
Ahh a young platform now discovering what all the older platforms already knew... people will misuse your systems, prepare for it.
Reviewers who are given iron clad paths that can not be deviated from even in the face of clear absurdity, in 2 seconds or less.
The belief that the rules are always right even when they are wrong, we will defend to the end the decisions as we drive people off the platform.
Its still sad that even Amazon just fell into line & offered no pushback against the broken DMCA system that punishes alleged violators & gives a pass when the allegations are false.
The cartels talk about the loss of imaginary dollars that they estimate, perhaps it is time for the platforms to show how much money they actually lose dealing with bogus notices & extra costs in having to deal with angry users who don't understand the law incentives immediate action over any review.
Hell given the sheer number of bogus submissions to Google (which isn't a valid target according to the law) if they got a $1 for every bogus notice they could exit advertising and triple profits.

Imagine a world where all bills were this short, sweet, clear with the intent laid out so even the slowest appellate judge can see what the intent was & not execute mental gymnastics to divine extra meanings...
Re: Re:
The kid was actually in court & didn't get a QI decision from the DA or Court before trial.

Cops don't know strip searching someone of the opposite sex on the side of the road isn't violating the law.... we demand a 6 yr old knows not to pick a tulip.
Courts holding 6 yr olds to higher standard than cops.
Maybe they just got confused, I mean cops to whine like children when their feels get hurt...

I wish Congresspeople had to come to hearings to explain why they keep lying to us, rejecting reality to impose their own, and how we can have any faith in them when they are unable to get anything correct.
(untitled comment)
"driven solely by “engagement metrics” or “monetizing outrage”"
Like these hearings.
Sitting members of Congress can & do outright lie about the law & facts to score "points". One would guess that perhaps even having sworn an oath to uphold it several are you are unfamiliar with the Constitution with the number of officials who claim the our decisions about content harmed someones 1st Amendment rights.
500,000+ people are dead, and we're having yet another hearing attempting to blame all of the ills of the world on tech.
Florida is currently a free for all super spreader event, but because someone thinks they were silenced we're in this hearing instead of sending in help to control the out of control crowds try to stem what will be another huge outbreak & possibly new strains across the country.
If Congressman Whiny Pants is so silenced, why is it I kept hearing him on so many platforms whining about how silenced he was?
Because it scores points & makes people mad at tech & serves as a distraction that y'all helped kill 500,000+ people.
People are going to be homeless, children are going to bed hungry, & you had the nerve to suggest that maybe people who were undeserving shouldn't get anything so we should delay it for everyone.
Would you have accepted the capitol police debating which of you should have been escorted out first on the 6th?
Would you accept a firefighter debating if he should fight the fire without making sure the owner was deserving of it?
You are all so detached from reality, its actually terrifying.
You believe the impossible is possible because you said so.
You believe in spending billions on gear our military can't actually use, because you're keeping corporate donors afloat but citizens in your state aren't worth a couple hundred extra dollars to try and keep going in a pandemic you all made worse.

Thats just what they want you to think!!!!!!!!!

Something something cults cut you off from the real world, telling you everyone is out to get you and the only one you can trust is dear leader.
Its slow at first, but as the 'signs' align you slip deeper and deeper into the mire.
Mentally insert a meme here:
You aren't important enough to chip, change my mind dot gif
If you talk to the crazy, you hear a tale of woe about how all of these bad things happened, but its not their fault it is the fault of the secret cabal who hates them b/c white/nationalist/evangelical/etc...
That Judge took away their children, not because they ended up in the hospital with measles after you took them to a "measles party", but because those evil people who passed laws to make sure we were all injected with a long list of horrible things want control of my baby so they can eat them!!!!
The only reason I showed up drunk for court was to stop the mind control rays from working & it wasn't real court anyways because there was no fringe on the flag my buddy Skippy told me the real law!
(Shhh Mike I can hear you rolling your eyes at me from here)
They use Happy Holidays to erase Baby Jeebus from Christmas!!!
Because in their little bubble everyone loves Baby Jeebus, Christmas is actually his birthday (not a stolen pagan festival), and everyone celebrates it even those mind controlling space laser controlling candle lighting Jews who control everything & use that power to keep me down.
The cult leaders enjoy keeping their followers focused on these things & supporting them even as the leaders sell them out over and over again, but manage to blow the whistle and redirect the anger away from where it actually belongs.
Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get me, but pretty sure there isn't a satellite tasked with following just me & agents dispatched to cause me misfortune at every turn.
Re: Re:
As an immortal sociopath I am offended by them giving me a bad name.

"It is fair to conclude, therefore, that one-party control of the press and media is a threat to a viable democracy."
You mean like refusing to call on reporters you don't like or revoking their press credentials like a spoiled brat when they ask you about things you said on video & now claim you never said?
These judges spend so much time imagining that the framers are just like them, when the framers probably would have horse whipped the lot of them for what they've done & how they've twisted the intent to meet their personal desires instead of what is best for all citizens.
